A Despatch was received from the Board of Revenue, dated 20th of March, embodying an Imperial Decree, in which the Viceroy Ts'en and Hopps are directed to collect the import duty of 30 taels a Chest at the Stations where the Likin of 16 taels is now levied in the neighbourhood of Canton, Macao & Macao. W. Hart had proposed to collect the duty, by which means it was expected that from 400,000 to 500,000 taels per annum would be added to the Revenue. He had sent for this purpose steam Cruisers & a Deputy Commissioner to Canton. The Board of Revenue considers this proposition a proof that it is not a mistake to suppose that the Viceroy of Canton would, as the Board feared, meet with serious opposition, & as the Board thinks it not wise ...
